AYF wins Youth Worker awards

It was double delight for AYF as their youth work team scooped Full-Time and Part-Time Youth Worker of the Year awards at Scotland's top awards night!

At YouthLink Scotland's 10th annual National Youth Worker of the Year awards night in Glasgow on Thursday 16th March 2017, both Graeme Johnston and Hollie Watkins were recognised for their work on the Isle of Arran.

Having both been nominated by Leigh Boyd, a young member of Arran Youth Foundations, they made it down to their respective category's shortlist of three and invited to the glamorous event in the Glasgow's Crowne Plaza hotel where they each lifted a trophy.

Winning his award after being shortlisted for the award for the second year running, Graeme Johnston said: "I was delighted to get the recognition from the young person who nominated me, and even better to win it!
"The great thing about youth work is knowing you are empowering young people and helping them to have a voice.
"YouthLink Scotland chief executive Jim Sweeney said it best last night, young people don't need to be told, they need to be listened to.
"A big thanks to AYF for giving me the best job in the world, and a massive thanks to the young folk of Arran for making it the best job in the world!"

Clearly delighted with her award, Hollie Watkins added: "It feels amazing! I'm still in a state of shock. It feels good knowing the young folk have a safe place where they can be themselves. Youth work teaches our young folk life skills and helps make them happy and content which can only be a good thing."

Hollie and Graeme were nominated for their incredible work with Arran Youth Foundations, which currently runs 14 weekly activities, including an LGBT+ club, youth forum, cooking group and professional guitar tuition.

In nominating them, Leigh described Graeme as a "large (and bald!) friendly giant" who "has the biggest heart ever", saying the four years she has known him have been the best years of her life, while stating Hollie has been an inspiration and a role model, describing her as "the big sister of the group."
